Welcome

Welcome to Riverlawn Presbyterian Church, where we strive to: purge ourselves of pride by focusing on and glorifying God, teach the truth through fellowship & discipleship, demonstrate a life of love through service to others, and share the gospel of Jesus Christ with those in need.

Our Mission

At Riverlawn Presbyterian we believe that we have a mission to both our local community as well as a global outreach. We want to provide a place where people can encounter Jesus Christ. Riverlawn feels called to minister to families and children in our community.

Riverlawn Capital Project

Continuing God’s Plan

The initial construction of Riverlawn Church was completed in 1958. Over the last 60 years, several building infrastructure components have been replaced, repaired, or revised. In the 1970’s, the gym was added, using the Building Fund and supplemental donations. In the mid 1980’s, the heating and cooling systems, for everything except the gym, were redesigned using new air conditioning equipment, but continuing to use the original boiler. In the 1990’s, the properties housing the offices, and His House were obtained using project specific donations. Additionally, the Sunday School rooms, adjacent to the choir room, were added and the kitchen was remodeled using private donations. Other major projects such as the infant nursery remodel, the choir loft remodel, the playground, the new garage, new musical instruments, the sound system, new entrance doors, and most recently, new roofs on the cottage and sanctuary have improved our church buildings and property.

As you can see, the members of Riverlawn have been faithful in maintaining, and growing that which has been given to us. Funding for the existing Building and Replacement Funds has continued over the years, and the generosity of individual members has enabled us to maintain a facility from which we carry out our mission.

Riverlawn now needs to replenish our capital funds in order to take on some of the less glamorous projects. We have major pieces of heating and cooling equipment that are in immediate need of replacement, and structural revisions needed to conserve energy and keep our facilities safe. Your Session has authorized a Capital Campaign, known as “Continuing God’s Plan”, and it is officially launched as of September 1, 2019. Your support, above and beyond your regular giving for operations, benevolences and mission work, will be critical to the success of this campaign. A prioritized project list will be communicated over the next several weeks. Our recent roofing projects have depleted our capital cash accounts, and it is likely that the heating and air conditioning will need attention sooner rather than later.

Please prayerfully consider how you can help in this major financial effort. You will be seeing additional communications giving you information around the plans and urgency of this initiative. You can begin contributing as early as this coming Sunday, by placing your gift in the offering plate and designating it for the Capital Campaign. Future newsletter articles will feature planned projects and track our progress toward our goal of $250,000.

What is a Capital Campaign?

Managing Riverlawn’s financial resources is quite similar to how you might manage your own money at home. There is money coming in monthly to pay the utility bills, meet the payroll, pay the insurance premiums, do routine minor maintenance, fund our programs, etc. This is Riverlawn’s checking account, and it operates pretty much hand to mouth, without a lot of surplus. But, there are also funds set aside, essentially a savings account, to take on larger projects that require large sums of money to complete. Riverlawn has maintained such a savings account for many years, and is periodically rejuvenated through memorial gifts or private donors. These funds recently enabled the replacement of the roofs on the cottage and the sanctuary. Now, however, the savings account needs a significant infusion to restore the operating reliability of our heating and cooling, as well as numerous other infrastructure projects. A capital campaign has been initiated. This campaign effort will provide information for your personal decision making, as well as opportunities for your involvement. Your donations will facilitate the completion of the refurbishment projects, and also re-establish a savings account for the upcoming generations.

While a capital campaign is undeniably a focused effort to raise money needed for refurbishment and restoration, the buildings are simply a tool to carry out the mission of the church. In short, it is not our mission to own and operate buildings. Rather, maintaining and enhancing our facilities for the next several years is a foundation to our mission, and our commitment to fulfilling that mission in the Riverlawn community.

Wednesday Night Bible Study
New Small Group Study!  Christianity calls us to sacrifice instead of living for oneself. We have to choose one or the other—we can't do both. The Christians in Corinth tried to live the Christian life in a worldly way. Paul wrote the letter of 1 Corinthians to a divided and self-centered people to remind them to follow Jesus and only Jesus.  In this 12-part series, we will walk into the messy lives of the Corinthians.  We'll see how the truth of the gospel and the Spirit of God can empower us to choose to follow Jesus every day of our lives.  The Book of 1 Corinthians begins October 16, at 6:15 PM in the cottage.  For a set of handouts or for questions, please contact Pastor Chris.

A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR

“As God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience … Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly … And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Col. 3:12-17)

As I read this charge to the Church, I asked myself, how are we living this out? How are we clothing ourselves with the character and the compassion of Christ? How is His message dwelling among us richly? How are we, through our words and works, lifting high the name of our Lord Jesus and giving thanks to the Father?

I want to share some of the ways that this is happening through Riverlawn – and just to ensure this does not come across as boastful, I must broadcast the undeniable fact that all of which is undertaken and accomplished for our Father’s glory has ever only been possible, in every single instance, entirely by His beautiful grace and His powerful Spirit. So here goes …

We rejoice, in the name of Christ, giving thanks for the ways that the members of Christ’s body here at Riverlawn minister to the needs in our own community, such as supporting the St. Albans Food Pantry, Christ’s Kitchen, Jubilee Emergency Assistance (helping those avoid termination of basic utilities like water and electric), Jericho House and Union Mission (offering food, shelter, and resources), and Habitat for Humanity … providing financial support for these ministries in various ways such as budgeted donations throughout the year, Cents-ability offerings, Souper Bowl of Caring food drives, St. Albans Race Against Hunger, Coat Drives, and Christmas Food Baskets.

We rejoice, in the name of Christ, giving thanks for the ways that the members of Christ’s body serve our local neighborhood, such as with the Snack Pack program providing over 20 bags of food items to students of Lakewood Elementary each week. We have strengthened our connection with and support of Lakewood in other ways as well – such as with the Church Outside the Walls day of service getting the school ready for the beginning of the year. And now three of our members are serving on LSIC for Lakewood – a group that discusses school issues and actions plans to solve the issues.

We rejoice, in the name of Christ, giving thanks for the ways that the members of Christ’s body are responding to God’s call, using the gifts that the Spirit provides, and displaying the tangible, transformative love of Christ through ministries such as making neck pillows for cancer patients; giving “exit bags” to behavioral health patients upon their release from care; going to WVSU to talk and pray with students weekly, offering snacks and goodies as part of the UKirk campus ministry.

We rejoice, in the name of Christ, giving thanks for the ways that the members of Christ’s body invite those around us to take part in joyful fellowship, sharing the good news, growing deeper in our faith, and providing more opportunities for connection through ministries such as our Wednesday Family Nights, prayer breakfasts, Guys’ Weekends, and many small group studies.

We rejoice, in the name of Christ, giving thanks for the ways that the members of Christ’s body are living out our covenant with and for children – providing ways to worship and serve alongside of our children and youth, offering ongoing opportunities to educate and advocate for them, such as through Sunday school, Jr. Church, Family Nights (again), Thrive and Ignite youth groups, Community Biddy Basketball, the Girl Scouts, and Friends of Bluestone.

We rejoice, in the name of Christ, giving thanks for the ways that the members of Christ’s body serve as mission partners – through prayers, giving, travel, work, worship, and witness – with global mission agencies including The Open Arms Foundation; The Outreach Foundation; The Presbytery of Nyeri, Kenya; globalLead; and Cru (Steve and Becky Bressler) – embodying the good news of Jesus Christ around the world in ways that heal and nurture, rescue and restore!

We rejoice, in the name of Christ, giving thanks for the ways that the members of Christ’s body offer themselves in fulfilling our chief end – to glorify God and enjoy Him forever – through the proclamation of the Word, the prayers of the people, and the singing of the saints in weekly worship; as well as Prayer and Praise services; and other special evenings of music lifting high Christ Jesus our Savior … But also for how our call to glorify God extends into every day and every place, as our “life song” goes out by the power of the Holy Spirit to transform more and more into the image of Jesus Christ, giving honor to the Father both now and forever.

We rejoice, in the name of Christ, giving thanks for the ways that the members of Christ’s body have given, and continue to give, to invest in what God is doing in and through His Church … at this moment in time and in the time ahead … in this very place on Pennsylvania Avenue and how it ripples beyond … as the members of Christ’s body join in and take part in continuing God’s plan to further His kingdom through servants who are willing and available, who exhibit the sacrificial love of Christ, who support the work of the Church through their prayers, giftedness, generosity love.

“Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” We will never run out of ways in which we can and should offer thanks to our great God for who He is and for all He has done, is doing, and will do in and through His redeemed people!

Will you rejoice with me?
